During the first 2024 presidential debate in Atlanta, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump exchanged sharp criticisms over abortion rights in the United States.

Biden strongly condemned the reversal of abortion rights, calling it a “terrible, ridiculous decision,” while Trump praised the reversal as a “great decision.” This debate highlighted the deep divide between the two candidates on this critical issue, reflecting their broader political and ideological differences.

Biden attributed the elimination of nationwide abortion rights to Trump’s appointment of conservative justices to the US Supreme Court. He argued that these appointments directly led to the court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, which had established the right to abortion.

This decision has since caused significant challenges for the Republican Party. In contrast, Trump defended his actions, asserting that Biden’s stance lacked any reasonable limits on abortion and that returning the decision-making power to the states was appropriate.

The debate also saw Trump criticize Biden on immigration, accusing him of failing to secure the southern US border and allowing criminals to enter the country. Trump labeled this issue “Biden migrant crime,” while Biden dismissed these claims as exaggerations and lies.

Biden emphasized that decisions about a woman’s health should be made by doctors, not politicians and that the founders of the nation did not intend for politicians to control such personal matters.

Trump stated that he supports exceptions to abortion bans for rape, incest, and the life of the mother, suggesting that this position was necessary for political viability. The debate gave voters a direct comparison of the two candidates, who are the oldest ever to seek the US presidency, and it was conducted with measures to ensure orderly exchanges, unlike their chaotic 2020 debate.

In a related legal development, the US Supreme Court ruled to allow abortions in Idaho in cases of medical emergencies, based on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). This decision reinstated a federal judge’s ruling that EMTALA overrides Idaho’s near-total abortion ban when the two laws conflict.

This ruling was part of ongoing legal battles surrounding state-level abortion bans, with Idaho being one of six states with stringent abortion restrictions that do not protect the health of pregnant women.
