In the men’s T20 World Cup semi-final in Guyana, England faced a dramatic defeat against India, losing by 68 runs and getting spun out for just 103 runs in 16.4 overs. The match’s slow and low surface made it challenging for England to chase India’s target of 171 for seven, a total bolstered by Rohit Sharma’s strategic batting and interrupted by an 80-minute rain delay.

This loss eliminated the defending champions, sending them home instead of progressing to the final against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma’s decision to bat first proved wise as he scored 57 runs from 39 balls, setting a solid foundation for India.

The spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav were instrumental in dismantling the English batting line-up, with Patel taking three for 23 and Yadav three for 19. India’s eighth consecutive win secured them a spot in the final, aiming to end an 11-year wait for a global trophy. Jasprit Bumrah also played a crucial role, dismissing key players Phil Salt and Jofra Archer.

The collapse of the English batting was triggered by Jos Buttler’s ill-fated reverse sweep, leading to a catch and subsequent wickets falling rapidly. Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali followed soon after, with Bairstow bowled out for a duck and Ali stumped.

Yadav continued the destruction with his skillful left-arm wrist spin, dismissing Sam Curran, Harry Brook, and Chris Jordan, showcasing his exceptional bowling talent.

The English collapse included two run-outs, adding to their woes against high-quality spin bowling. England’s campaign had been inconsistent, losing three out of four matches against full-member opposition.

This comprehensive defeat is expected to prompt an internal review. Buttler admitted to miscalculations, particularly in not utilizing Moeen Ali’s bowling, which could have been effective given the conditions favoring spinners.

Despite some initial promise from England, including dismissing key Indian players and containing runs, India managed to push past a par score. Contributions from Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel in the final overs solidified India’s total.

Patel’s one-handed six in the last over underscored his impact, which extended beyond batting as he played a crucial role in dismantling England’s batting, securing India’s place in the final against South Africa.
