U.S. Expresses Concerns to India Over Russia Relations Amid Ukraine Conflict

The United States is worried about India’s relationship with Russia, especially since Russia invaded Ukraine. This concern was voiced right after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met informally with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said that the U.S. has clearly told India about these worries, given the current conflict in Ukraine.

During a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller indicated that the U.S. expects India, and any other country engaging with Russia, to advocate for Moscow’s adherence to the United Nations charter, and to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This statement underscores the ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia and gather international support against its actions in Ukraine. Miller’s comments reflect the broader U.S. strategy to maintain pressure on countries with strong ties to Russia.

Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has been urging India to distance itself from Russia. India, however, has maintained its relationship with Russia, citing longstanding ties and economic dependencies. Despite the pressure, India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, balancing its diplomatic relations with both the U.S. and Russia.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia marks his first trip to the country since the invasion of Ukraine. Invited by President Putin for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, Modi’s visit included a private informal meeting and dinner at Putin’s country residence, a significant gesture of hospitality from the Russian leader. This visit aims to strengthen the bilateral ties between India and Russia, which have been historically robust.

Following their meeting, Modi expressed gratitude towards Putin in a social media post, indicating a positive outlook on future talks to further solidify the India-Russia relationship.

Putin, in turn, praised Modi’s leadership and contributions to India’s development, highlighting India’s growing economic stature. The mutual appreciation and reaffirmation of their partnership underscore the ongoing significance of the India-Russia relationship, even amid international pressures and geopolitical challenges.
