Harrison Butker responded sharply to Serena Williams’ critical remarks directed at him during the ESPY Awards. The controversy stemmed from comments Butker made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College in May, where he expressed views on women becoming homemakers, as well as controversial statements about abortion and the LGBTQ community.

While attending the ESPY Awards, Butker was in the audience when Serena Williams, along with her sister Venus and actress Quinta Brunson, took the stage to honor women in sports. During their presentation, Serena directly addressed Butker, stating, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you,” with Brunson adding, “At all. Like ever.”

In response to Serena’s comments, Butker acknowledged her right to express her beliefs but criticized her for using a platform meant for celebrating athletes to exclude those with differing views. He commended Serena for using her platform as a host but pointed out the irony in not extending inclusivity to all athletes, especially at an event like the ESPYs dedicated to honoring diverse achievements in sports.

The exchange at the ESPYs has sparked further debate about the boundaries of free speech and inclusivity in sports and public platforms. It remains to be seen how Serena Williams and others involved will respond to Butker’s rebuttal and whether this incident will continue to resonate within the sports community and beyond.
