Oil Tanker Capsizes Off Oman Coast Prompting Major Rescue Effort for Crew

An oil tanker named MT Prestige Falcon capsized in the Arabian Sea approximately 25 nautical miles southeast of Oman’s Ras Madrakah area on Monday. The incident prompted a swift response from search and rescue teams, primarily focused on locating the 13 crew members onboard, which included 10 Indians and three Sri Lankans.

Amidst challenging conditions marked by rough seas and strong winds, teams managed to rescue nine individuals, mostly Indians, while tragically confirming the death of one crew member.

The cause of the tanker’s capsizing remains unknown, as does the current status of its cargo. The vessel, flying the flag of Comoros, had departed from the UAE’s Hamriya port en route to Yemen’s Aden port with a shipment of oil products, according to maritime tracking data.

The Indian Navy dispatched a warship to aid in the search efforts, collaborating closely with Omani authorities to coordinate the rescue operations.

Efforts are ongoing to locate any remaining crew members who might still be in distress in the waters off Oman’s coast. The situation underscores the perilous conditions faced by maritime crews operating in the region, compounded by unpredictable environmental factors.
