Vice President Kamala Harris is anticipated to announce her vice presidential pick on Tuesday, ahead of their first joint rally in Philadelphia later that evening. This announcement is highly anticipated and could shift depending on Harris’s final decision or potential media leaks that might affect the timing.

The rollout is expected to follow the format of previous major announcements, incorporating digital videos, social media elements, and fundraising appeals. Supporters will also receive various text messages throughout the day, though the specifics are still being finalized.

The decision follows recent in-person meetings with three key contenders: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Other candidates who have been considered include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The vetting process is being overseen by former Attorney General Eric Holder, who has been working closely with Harris’s campaign.

Harris’s choice will be influenced by the need for a running mate who is comfortable supporting a woman in leadership, particularly a Black and Indian woman. The selected individual will need to handle tasks and roles that might not be ideal and be prepared to work in Harris’s shadow.

The campaign is also focused on selecting a candidate who will not only support Harris but also align with her in a way that does not undermine her position, especially looking ahead to the 2028 election.

The campaign is aiming to find a vice presidential candidate who can appeal to key demographics and voters, particularly those who might have supported Biden. This includes older white voters, suburban women, and white men who are uncertain about voting for a Black and South Asian woman.

The campaign seeks a running mate who can offer a sense of validation to these voters, especially those disillusioned with Trump but wary of Biden and Harris.

The announcement will kick off a five-day, seven-state tour with Harris and her new running mate. An event in Savannah, Georgia, scheduled for Friday has been postponed due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Harris recently secured the majority of support from Democratic National Committee delegates needed for her presidential nomination, with the Democratic National Convention set to begin in Chicago on August 19.
