Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz held their first campaign rally together in Philadelphia after Walz was announced as Harris’s vice-presidential running mate. The event, which drew over 12,000 supporters, marked a significant moment in their campaign as they aimed to build enthusiasm and support for the upcoming election.

Walz expressed his pride in joining the ticket and thanked Harris for the opportunity, while Harris praised Walz as a leader capable of helping build a brighter future.

Governor Walz, previously a lesser-known figure on the national stage, quickly gained attention through his straightforward media appearances and relatable Midwestern background. His selection as Harris’s running mate was officially announced just 91 days before the election, solidifying the Democratic ticket.

During the rally, Walz directed criticism at the Republican candidates, former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator JD Vance, contrasting his and Harris’s campaign with their opponents.

In her speech, Harris highlighted key aspects of Walz’s background, including his military service, career as a high school teacher and coach, and his support for the gay-straight alliance at his school.

She emphasized their campaign’s commitment to reaching out to all Americans, regardless of their geographic or demographic background, aiming to broaden the Democratic coalition. Harris introduced new lines in her speech, appealing to moderates and independents.

The announcement of Walz as the vice-presidential candidate resulted in a significant fundraising boost, with the campaign raising $20 million in donations shortly after the news.

Walz had undergone an accelerated vetting process alongside other contenders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who also spoke at the rally in support of the Harris-Walz ticket. Shapiro, despite not being selected as the running mate, pledged his full support for the campaign.

Harris’s decision to choose Walz came after a period of intense activity following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race after a poor debate performance against Trump.

Harris acknowledged the whirlwind nature of the campaign’s launch and stressed the importance of moving forward to secure victory in the general election. The rally in Philadelphia marked a pivotal moment as Harris and Walz geared up for the final stretch of their campaign.
