This summer in the UK has been marked by intense violence and disorder, largely fueled by misinformation spread rapidly on X (formerly Twitter). The platform’s owner, Elon Musk, has exacerbated the situation by disseminating inflammatory and false claims to his vast follower base.

This issue highlights Musk’s ongoing tendency to stir controversy, despite his proclaimed commitment to free speech. His actions have contradicted his words, notably through the arbitrary suspension of journalists and others whose viewpoints he disapproves of.

The broader debate about free speech and content moderation on X is not new, but it has gained renewed attention due to Musk’s recent behavior. This has led many users to reconsider their presence on the platform, contemplating whether leaving X could be a form of protest against its current management. However, this consideration is not unprecedented, as disillusionment with social media’s evolving nature has been a recurring theme.

The landscape of social media has changed significantly, moving away from the simplicity of chronological posts to algorithm-driven feeds. This shift has altered how content is delivered and consumed, resulting in decreased engagement and a less personal experience. Users now find their feeds manipulated in ways that often feel disconnected from their actual interests.

Faced with these changes, some users feel compelled to abandon their accounts on platforms like X and Instagram. This impulse to leave is driven by a desire to reclaim control over their online experience. Yet, in practice, such a decision might prove impractical, similar to how one might find sticking with an unreliable train service more feasible than alternative transport options.

Despite these frustrations, there is still a contingent of users who see value in staying on X. For some, the platform remains a crucial tool for professional networking and community engagement. Notable contributions and positive interactions persist, as highlighted by individuals who appreciate the remaining supportive and productive aspects of the platform.

Others remain on X out of a lack of viable alternatives. Many users have experimented with other platforms like Threads, VERO, Mastodon, and Bluesky but have found them lacking in the community and functionality that X offers. The difficulty of building a new network and the absence of a better option often keep users from making a complete switch.

Another approach for some is to scale back their engagement on X while maintaining their accounts. This strategy allows users to stay connected with their network and access content selectively, avoiding the platform’s more problematic aspects. It offers a middle ground between total departure and full participation.

Meanwhile, Threads has emerged as a promising alternative for those dissatisfied with X. Users report a more positive and less politicized experience on Threads, with its integration with Instagram providing additional benefits. However, Threads is still evolving and does not yet fully meet all the needs of its users, which leaves some still tethered to X for the time being.
