Poland has signed a significant $10 billion deal to acquire 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from Boeing, marking a major advancement in the country’s military modernization efforts. This purchase comes in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has pushed Poland to enhance its defense capabilities rapidly.

The Apache helicopters are part of Poland’s broader strategy to upgrade its military, with the helicopters to be stationed at the Inowroclaw air base. Poland’s Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz described the deal as a milestone in transforming the Polish army.

This deal with Boeing is the latest in a series of defense contracts between Poland and the United States. In addition to the Apache helicopters, Poland has recently signed deals to acquire hundreds of AIM-120C AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and 48 launchers for the Patriot air defense systems.

Poland has committed to spending over 4% of its GDP on defense, a figure that is double NATO’s target. The ongoing war in Ukraine has not only prompted Poland to increase its defense spending but has also strengthened its alliance with the U.S., particularly as Poland is a key NATO member on the alliance’s eastern flank.

The Apache helicopter acquisition was approved by the U.S. State Department and Congress last year, and it is seen as a vital addition to the Polish military’s capabilities. According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Apaches will complement Poland’s existing Abrams tanks, which were previously purchased from the U.S.

The helicopters and tanks are expected to work together in military operations, enhancing Poland’s overall defense strategy. Poland had earlier ordered 250 Abrams tanks, with deliveries expected in 2023, making it the first country outside the U.S. to possess this advanced variant.

The deal for the Apache helicopters also includes maintenance equipment, technical and training support, flight simulators, and spare parts. The agreement covers a wide range of logistics, including pilot training and armament, signifying a comprehensive approach to modernizing Poland’s military aviation.

Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Bejda emphasized the significance of the deal, stating that the $10 billion investment represents an insurance policy for Poland’s security and freedom, aiming to deter potential aggressors.

The first of these Apache helicopters is expected to be delivered in 2028, but Polish pilots have already begun training on them. The Apaches will replace Poland’s aging fleet of Russian Mi-24 helicopters, marking a shift away from Soviet-era military equipment and further strengthening Poland’s defense posture against external threats.

This acquisition underscores Poland’s commitment to bolstering its military as tensions continue to rise in Eastern Europe due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
