Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor, and Kamala Harris’ running mate, will mark a historic moment in American politics as the first white man to serve as the chief supporter of a Black woman at this level. His role has been widely appreciated by a significant part of the Democratic Party’s base, particularly Black women, who feel that it’s high time for such representation.

Activist Brenda Coles, for instance, sees Walz as the right person for the job, emphasizing his comfort in being subordinate to Harris, a woman of great caliber. She expresses her pride in supporting Harris and claims Walz as her vice president as well.

Harris’ decision to only consider white men as potential running mates, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, was seen as a strategic move to balance the ticket and appeal to white voters. For many Democrats, especially Black women, this pairing represents significant progress in addressing the country’s racial issues.

Many Black women became fans of Walz after his recent rally with Harris in Philadelphia, appreciating his working-class background and his legislative efforts that resonate with Black communities, such as the creation of a statewide Office of Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls.

Walz’s selection is also seen as a positive step in advancing racial progress. Democratic Rep. Jennifer McClellan views his role as the natural progression of his career, one dedicated to serving others. Young delegate Dottie Ferreira felt that Walz’s ability to energize the Black Caucus at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) shows his potential to transcend racial divides.

Ferreira believes that Walz’s support of Harris as a Black woman in such a prominent position is a significant and inspiring moment in American history.

Walz is being compared to Joe Biden’s role as Barack Obama’s running mate, where he played a supportive role in a historic candidacy. Melinda Perez, a lawyer from New York, relates Walz’s partnership with Harris to her own experiences in corporate America, where having the support of a white man can feel like a powerful alliance.

Perez believes this partnership reflects broader dynamics in society, where a white man backing a Black woman can help bridge gaps and alleviate concerns among certain voters.

Some Democrats, like Belenda Anderson from Memphis, see Walz’s support as crucial for Harris to win in key states, suggesting that without him, Harris might not succeed in November, and another Black woman might not have a chance at the presidency again.

This sentiment is shared by many Black women within the party, who are central to its organizing efforts. Jotaka Eaddy, founder of “Win With Black Women,” praises Walz as a coalition builder, aligning with Harris’ vision of inclusive governance.

White men in the Democratic Party, like former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, also recognize the importance of this moment. Jones, who won his Senate seat largely with the support of Black women, acknowledges the historical significance of Walz’s role in helping a highly qualified Black woman make history.

He believes that Walz’s presence on the ticket could change some voters’ minds who still hold racist or sexist views about Harris, making him a fitting complement to her candidacy.
