Cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the U.S. and Middle Eastern allies, have shown progress in Cairo, according to the White House. The talks, led by CIA Director William Burns and senior Middle East advisor Brett McGurk, are focused on resolving major disagreements, particularly Israel’s desire to maintain control over two strategic corridors in Gaza.

While White House national security spokesman John Kirby noted that progress has been made, details of the discussions remain undisclosed, though momentum among the mediators from the U.S., Israel, Egypt, and Qatar is evident.

President Joe Biden has been actively involved, taking time during his vacation to speak with Qatar’s emir and Egypt’s president to discuss the ongoing negotiations. These diplomatic efforts come amid escalating concerns about a broader regional conflict following targeted killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, which have been attributed to Israel.

A significant sticking point in the talks is Hamas’ demand for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on retaining control of key corridors to prevent Hamas from rearming.

Hamas has criticized Netanyahu, accusing him of blocking any potential cease-fire agreement. Egypt’s President el-Sissi emphasized the need for flexibility from both sides to avoid further regional conflict.

Despite the challenges, Biden had a constructive conversation with Netanyahu, and U.S. officials are pushing both parties to finalize the details of an agreement. However, skepticism remains on both sides about the prospects of reaching a deal.

The ongoing conflict, which began with a deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties, with over 40,000 Palestinians killed in the Israeli response. Although Biden previously expressed optimism about a potential agreement following discussions with Egyptian and Qatari leaders, his tone became more cautious as talks progressed, indicating that Hamas was retreating from negotiations.

The situation is further complicated by the plight of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Families of these hostages met with Netanyahu, expressing frustration over the delay in reaching a cease-fire that could secure their loved one’s release.

Domestic pressure on Netanyahu is mounting, especially after the discovery of the bodies of six captives, raising fears for the remaining hostages. Experts like Jonathan Panikoff from the Atlantic Council suggest that while there might be some movement in the talks, deep-seated skepticism on both sides remains a significant barrier to reaching a final agreement.
