H.R. McMaster, the former National Security Adviser to Donald Trump, recently discussed the challenges Trump faces in making consistent decisions, emphasizing the importance of having a competent team around him to mitigate his susceptibility to manipulation.

In an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation, McMaster noted that while Trump is capable of making significant decisions in foreign policy and national security, he often struggles to maintain these decisions due to external pressures, particularly those related to maintaining the unwavering support of his political base.

During the interview, McMaster also touched upon the contents of his new book, At War With Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House, which provides an insider’s perspective on the dynamics within the Trump administration.

He described White House meetings as being dominated by “competitive sycophancy,” where the desire to please the president often overshadowed substantive policy discussions. A key example highlighted by McMaster was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s successful manipulation of Trump through flattery, exploiting Trump’s vulnerabilities to serve Russian interests.

McMaster’s insights challenge the narrative often put forward by Trump and his supporters that he is uniquely equipped to deal with autocratic leaders like Putin. They argue that Trump’s strength and assertiveness make him a more effective leader on the global stage compared to figures like Kamala Harris.

However, McMaster’s experiences suggest that Trump, despite his bravado, was not immune to being influenced by foreign leaders who understood how to play to his insecurities.

When discussing his decision to write about Trump’s interactions with Putin, McMaster admitted that he had reservations about documenting these events.

However, he ultimately decided that exposing these manipulation tactics could serve as a warning, potentially helping a future Trump administration avoid similar pitfalls. McMaster underscored that manipulation attempts are a common challenge for all presidents, but with the right advice, Trump was capable of making sound decisions.

One such decision that McMaster praised was Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear treaty with Iran in 2018, which he viewed as a crucial step in addressing the growing threat posed by Iran.

McMaster criticized the Biden administration’s approach, suggesting that their reluctance to directly confront Iran has emboldened the regime, allowing it to escalate its aggressive actions with little consequence. He warned that Iran’s pursuit of its objectives, particularly against Israel, represents a serious and escalating threat that must be addressed.
