The aftermath of Typhoon Yagi has left Vietnam grappling with a severe crisis, with the death toll reaching 233 as of Friday. Rescue operations continue amid landslides and flash floods triggered by the typhoon’s impact. Despite some areas seeing a reduction in floodwaters, many neighborhoods in Hanoi remain submerged, and it may take days before relief reaches the most affected regions.

Typhoon Yagi struck Vietnam last Saturday, unleashing heavy rains that caused widespread flooding and landslides, particularly in the mountainous northern part of the country. The disaster has resulted in 103 people being reported missing and over 800 injured. In the province of Lao Cai, which has been among the hardest hit, a flash flood completely destroyed the hamlet of Lang Nu, with 48 confirmed dead and 39 still unaccounted for.

In Hanoi’s outskirts, Nguyen Thi Loan, a resident of the village of A Lac, returned to find her home and community severely damaged. The floods have devastated her rice crops and submerged household appliances, exacerbating the already dire situation. Efforts to recover and rebuild are complicated by the extensive damage and ongoing challenges faced by the survivors.

The impact of Typhoon Yagi extends beyond Vietnam, affecting neighboring countries such as Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. In Thailand, flooding and landslides have caused 10 deaths, and further risks of flash floods are expected. Myanmar has reported at least 33 fatalities and has established relief camps for nearly 240,000 flood victims, with concerns that the death toll could rise as more information emerges.

International aid is being mobilized to support the affected regions, with Australia, South Korea, and the U.S. pledging financial and humanitarian assistance. The disaster has also disrupted industrial activities, particularly in northern Vietnam’s Haiphong, impacting international supply chains. As the region braces for more rain, recovery efforts are ongoing, with experts and aid organizations working to address immediate needs and assist those affected by the devastating typhoon.
