Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Yemen’s Houthis of severe consequences after they launched a missile deep into Israel. The missile, fired early in the morning, appears to have fragmented mid-air and landed in an open area in central Israel. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the attack marks a significant escalation, given that central Israel is usually shielded from such assaults.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, have confirmed the attack and boasted about using a “new hypersonic ballistic missile.” They also threatened more strikes as the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack approaches. This development is noteworthy because it represents a rare instance of a missile penetrating so far into Israel, which usually enjoys a higher level of safety from such long-range threats.

In his response, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would impose a “heavy price” on those who try to harm it. This warning follows Israel’s recent military actions, including a strike on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah in July, in retaliation for a deadly drone attack on Tel Aviv. Netanyahu’s comments reflect Israel’s broader strategy to confront Iran’s influence and its regional allies.

Additionally, Israel faced a barrage of projectiles from Lebanon, with around 40 crossing into its northern region. Some of these projectiles were intercepted, while others landed in open areas. The situation in northern Israel is tense due to ongoing attacks by Hezbollah, which has been targeting Israeli military sites with increasing frequency. Netanyahu has called for a shift in the balance of power to protect northern residents.

The recent escalation is part of a larger, ongoing conflict that began with the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. The violence has led to significant casualties on both sides, with over 41,000 Palestinians reportedly killed in Israel’s subsequent operations in Gaza. The situation remains volatile, with concerns that the conflict could further escalate as various militant groups continue their attacks across the region.
