Kemi Badenoch, a contender for Conservative leadership in the UK, has expressed strong views on immigration, suggesting that individuals who bring “foreign conflicts” with them should not be welcomed. In an interview with the BBC, she emphasized her commitment to “Western values” and the importance of maintaining the principles that have historically defined British society.

Badenoch believes that immigrants should share these values to ensure the continuity of the UK’s cultural integrity. Her remarks come as the Conservative Party holds its conference in Birmingham, where discussions about immigration are central to the party’s agenda.

At the same time, Badenoch’s leadership rival, Robert Jenrick, has made immigration a top priority for reform. Jenrick argues for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights as a necessary step to address immigration issues, a position that Badenoch has not publicly endorsed.

Alongside them, two other candidates—James Cleverly and Tom Tugendhat—are also vying for leadership, with all four expected to use the conference as a platform to outline their positions and appeal to Tory activists. A narrowing of candidates will occur shortly after Parliament reconvenes, culminating in the announcement of a new leader by November 2.

Badenoch articulated her stance in an article for the Sunday Telegraph, stating that the UK should not be naive about the potential for immigrants to abandon their ancestral conflicts.

She asserted that not all cultures are equally valid, indicating that some cultural practices may contradict British values, particularly those that undermine women’s rights. In her view, the UK should ensure that immigrants who enter the country are aligned with its core principles, emphasizing a need for a shared national identity and culture.

The leadership candidates differ in their approaches to reducing immigration. Jenrick has emphasized the significance of numerical limits on immigration, critiquing Badenoch’s focus on cultural compatibility. He believes that merely planning for the future without immediate action on numbers risks losing public trust.

In contrast, Badenoch counters that while numbers are important, cultural integration should take precedence in determining who is allowed to settle in the UK. She highlighted her own experiences growing up in Nigeria to underscore her commitment to preserving British culture.

As discussions continue at the Tory conference, candidates are also reflecting on the party’s recent electoral challenges, including a significant loss in the July general election attributed to internal divisions. Cleverly remarked on the necessity for the party to refocus on public interests rather than internal disputes, while Tugendhat underscored the need for a leader with real-life experience.

He called for the Conservative Party to prioritize leadership that resonates with the electorate, distancing the party from perceptions of elitism associated with its past leaders. As the candidates present their visions, the party’s future direction remains uncertain, particularly on the contentious issue of immigration.
