Stars align as Oppenheimer leads Academy Award nominations

The 2024 Academy Award nominations have been announced, with Christopher Oppenheimer leading the pack with 13 nods. The film, which tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life, is followed closely by Poor Things and Killers Of The Flower Moon, which garnered 11 and 10 nominations respectively.

The nominees for Best Picture include American Fiction, Anatomy Of A Fall, Barbie, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, and Poor Things. Notably, Killers Of The Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, and Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, are both strong contenders for Best Director, alongside Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things and Justine Triet for Anatomy Of A Fall.

In the acting categories, Cillian Murphy is up for Best Actor for his role in Oppenheimer, alongside Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction, and Colman Domingo for Rustin. In the Best Actress category, Annette Bening is nominated for her role in Nyad, alongside Lily Gladstone for Killers Of The Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy Of A Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Emma Stone for Poor Things.

The nominations for the original songs are also noteworthy, with Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie all vying for top honors.

In the technical categories, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and The Zone Of Interest are all strong contenders, with nominations for visual effects, sound, costume design, and cinematography. The nominees for the documentary feature films, documentary short films, and animated short films are also announced, with films such as Bobi Wine: The People’s President, To Kill A Tiger, and The Last Repair Shop all vying for top honors.

Finally, the nominees for the international feature films, including Io Capitano from Italy and Society Of The Snow from Spain, also announced, along with the nominees for the live action short films, including The After and Invincible.
