Russians are perplexed by President Vladimir Putin’s decision to deploy “space troops” to defend the Kursk region amid a shortage of military manpower during a Ukrainian incursion. The deployment, reported by the independent investigative outlet Important Stories, involves a temporary unit of Russia’s Aerospace Forces, including personnel from logistics companies, engineers, mechanics, and some officers.
This unit, however, lacks the traditional combat capabilities of motorized riflemen, leading to doubts about its effectiveness in the conflict.
The Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region, which began on August 6, has been remarkably successful, with Ukrainian forces seizing a substantial amount of Russian territory. This marks the first time since World War II that foreign troops have occupied Russian soil.
