Former President Bill Clinton took to the Democratic National Convention stage on Wednesday, using his well-known oratory skills to criticize Donald Trump and endorse Kamala Harris. Clinton characterized Trump as self-centered, contrasting him with Harris, whom he praised for her dedication to addressing American needs. His speech aimed to energize Democrats and underscore the clear choice between Harris and Trump.

The third night of the convention was designed to build on the enthusiasm Harris has generated since she became the top of the party’s presidential ticket. Democrats are keen to harness the momentum created by President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside and to prepare their supporters for a tough contest against Trump.

At 78, Clinton showed signs of aging, with a sometimes halting delivery and physical signs of slowing down. Despite this, he effectively used folksy, relatable language to highlight Harris’s strengths and encourage Democratic support for her candidacy.

The convention theme for the night was “a fight for our freedoms,” focusing on issues like abortion access and voting rights. Various speakers aimed to demonstrate how Democrats are defending these freedoms against Republican efforts to roll them back, using personal stories and props to emphasize their points.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis used a symbolic oversized book to criticize the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, which outlines conservative goals if Trump were to win. Polis’s dramatic gesture involved ripping a page from the book to illustrate his argument to undecided voters.

Democrats also addressed the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, recognizing the hostages held by Hamas and highlighting the human cost of the conflict. Jon and Rachel Goldberg-Polin’s emotional tribute to their abducted son underscored the humanitarian aspect of the issue.

The convention also highlighted contrasts with GOP positions on immigration, with Texas Representative Veronica Escobar defending border policies and critiquing Trump’s approach. Escobar’s comments aimed to present a more measured Democratic stance on immigration.

In a nod to his experience, Clinton reflected on his long history with the conventions, humorously noting his first appearance in 1972. He encouraged delegates to support the Harris-Walz ticket, expressing confidence that it would make them proud for generations.
