Vice President Kamala Harris has gained a considerable 13-point advantage over former President Donald Trump among women voters, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll. The poll reveals that 51 percent of registered women voters favor Harris, while 38 percent back Trump.

This gap underscores the importance of women voters, who have been a decisive force in recent elections. On the other hand, Trump leads by 7 points among male voters, reflecting a clear gender divide in support for the two candidates.

Historically, women voters have been pivotal in shaping election outcomes, particularly since Trump’s 2016 victory. Their influence was critical in the “blue wave” that led to significant Democratic gains during the 2018 midterms.

The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade further galvanized this demographic, making them a key driver of Harris’s presidential campaign momentum. This consistent engagement among women voters is likely contributing to Harris’s current lead.

The broader picture shows Harris leading Trump by 3 points in the general presidential race, with 46 percent of registered voters nationwide supporting her compared to 43 percent for Trump.

This represents a notable shift from earlier in the race when Trump was ahead of President Biden before Biden’s unexpected exit. Harris’s steady lead in recent weeks suggests that the shake-up in the Democratic ticket has bolstered her campaign.

Additionally, voter enthusiasm appears to be in Harris’s favor. Seventy percent of Democrats report being extremely or very enthusiastic about voting this year, compared to 60 percent of Republicans.

This is a significant change from previous months when Republican enthusiasm was higher. Harris also holds a stronger net favorability rating than Trump, further indicating her appeal to a broader segment of the electorate.

Harris’s campaign is historic not only for her current polling but also for the potential it represents. If elected, she would be the first female President of the United States, following her groundbreaking role as the first woman Vice President.

This polling data comes as the Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago, where efforts are being made to mobilize Democratic women voters. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was the first woman to be nominated for the presidency by a major party, has been urging support for Harris, emphasizing the opportunity to shatter the glass ceiling in American politics.
