Chicago is bracing for extreme heat on Monday and Tuesday, with the heat index potentially reaching as high as 115 degrees. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an excessive heat watch and warning, forecasting a high of 96 degrees on Monday with a “real feel” of 105 degrees. Tuesday is expected to be even hotter, with a high of 99 degrees and a heat index of 115 degrees, potentially making it the hottest day of the year.

The NWS has emphasized the dangerous nature of this heatwave, particularly on Tuesday, and advised residents to prepare by altering outdoor plans. The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) has also issued a media advisory, urging Chicagoans to stay indoors, remain in air-conditioned environments, and stay hydrated. The city will open over 250 cooling centers to help residents cope with the heat.

The OEMC has provided several recommendations for staying safe during the heatwave. These include monitoring weather updates, staying hydrated, avoiding the sun, checking on relatives and neighbors, and never leaving children or pets in vehicles. Chicagoans are also encouraged to call 3-1-1 for wellness checks or to find the nearest cooling center.

The extreme heat is being driven north from the southern regions due to a deep southerly flow, which is expected to push the heat into the Midwest and Great Lakes area by Tuesday. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has announced that all classrooms are air-conditioned and that outdoor sports practices and games will be moved indoors or canceled to ensure student safety.

In addition to the heat, Sunday has been declared an “Air Pollution Action Day,” as air quality is expected to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups. There is also a possibility of scattered thunderstorms in the region on Sunday evening.
