Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey dismissed former President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to have the government or insurance companies cover in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, questioning his sincerity on reproductive issues.

Healey expressed skepticism, stating that voters cannot trust Trump on such matters and criticized his tendency to make statements based on shifting political winds. She specifically highlighted his sudden support for IVF, calling it false and offensive.

Trump, in an interview with NBC News, claimed that under his administration, the government or insurance companies would pay for IVF treatments for all Americans who need it. This statement appears to be an attempt to address the backlash he faced over his previous stances on reproductive rights. However, Healey and other Democrats remain unconvinced of his commitment to this issue.

Democrats have pointed out that while Republicans, including Trump, have not explicitly opposed IVF access, their policies have led to legal decisions that could hinder such services. For example, the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos could be treated as children has caused disruptions to IVF services in the state. This ruling is seen as a direct consequence of the broader anti-abortion stance within the Republican Party, which Trump has supported.

Healey emphasized that voters should not believe anything Trump says, drawing from her experience as attorney general, where she sued his administration numerous times. She contrasted Trump’s record with that of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who she said are committed to protecting reproductive freedom and other key issues. Healey praised Harris and Walz for actively engaging with voters across the political spectrum on these issues.

The debate over IVF and reproductive rights has become increasingly significant, especially following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, which Trump played a role in by appointing justices who supported the decision. As the 2024 election approaches, the Trump campaign, like much of the Republican Party, has sought to avoid direct discussions on abortion and related topics, given their unpopularity with many voters.
