Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently condemned Western countries for their support of Israel, accusing the country of committing massacres in Gaza with European and American weaponry. Speaking in Baghdad, his comments come at a time of heightened regional tensions, as both Iran and Iraq navigate complex relationships with the U.S. and each other.

Pezeshkian’s statements reflect Iran’s ongoing support for Hamas and criticism of Israeli military actions in Gaza, where over 40,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed and much of the population displaced.

Pezeshkian’s visit to Baghdad is a strategic move to strengthen ties between Iran and Iraq. The relationship is crucial for Iran, especially in the wake of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, which had previously seen Saddam Hussein as a key adversary.

Baghdad’s relationship with Tehran has become increasingly significant, given Iran’s support for Shiite militias in Iraq and the complex balancing act it must perform with both Iran and the United States, which maintains a military presence in the country.

Tensions have also been evident in recent weeks, with an explosion near Baghdad International Airport, which was used by U.S. military forces, adding to the backdrop of strained relations.

The U.S. Embassy described the incident as an “attack” on its diplomatic facility, although details were limited. The presence of U.S. troops in Iraq remains a contentious issue, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts involving Iran and its regional interests.

During Pezeshkian’s visit, Iraq and Iran signed 14 memorandums of understanding to enhance their relationship, with Iraq pledging not to allow its airspace to be used for attacks against Iran, presumably referring to Israeli operations.

This visit also includes Pezeshkian’s plan to visit important Shiite shrines and discuss a major infrastructure project linking cities in both countries, indicating a focus on deepening economic and cultural ties.

The visit comes amid broader geopolitical tensions, including accusations against Iran from the U.S. and Britain of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine.

The continued presence of U.S. troops in Iraq is a flashpoint for both regional militias and political debates within Iraq, as local politicians and militias continue to grapple with the implications of these international and regional dynamics.
