Swiss police have arrested several people following the first use of the controversial “Sarco” capsule, a futuristic device designed to assist suicide. The incident occurred in a wooded area in Merishausen, located in the northern Swiss canton of Schaffhausen.

Local prosecutors have launched criminal proceedings against those involved, accusing them of “inducing and aiding suicide.” However, authorities have not disclosed details about the individuals arrested or the identity of the deceased.

The organization behind the Sarco capsule, The Last Resort, revealed that the deceased was a 64-year-old American woman suffering from a severely compromised immune system. Among those arrested was Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort, as well as a Dutch journalist and two Swiss citizens.

According to the organization, Willet was the only person present at the time of the woman’s death, which he described as “peaceful, fast, and dignified.” They also confirmed that the woman had passed psychiatric evaluations before choosing to end her life.

The number of detainees involved in the case has not been confirmed by Schaffhausen prosecutors. The Sarco capsule, designed by Australian physician Philip Nitschke, uses nitrogen gas to induce death by reducing oxygen levels.

Nitschke has been known for his work on assisted suicide since the 1990s, and Switzerland has become a hub for assisted suicide due to its legal framework allowing the practice under certain conditions.

The Sarco capsule has attracted significant media attention and sparked discussions about its legal and ethical implications. The Last Resort believed that it had acted within the law based on legal advice, although the device has raised concerns among authorities.

Switzerland’s permissive stance on assisted suicide has made it a focal point for advocates, but the case is reigniting debates about the role of technology in euthanasia.

Swiss health minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider expressed concerns about the Sarco capsule, stating that it does not meet product safety requirements.

She also noted that its use of nitrogen gas may not be legally compliant. As investigations continue, the incident is expected to fuel ongoing debates surrounding the legality and ethics of assisted suicide and the potential risks posed by new technological methods.
