Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, an accused serial killer in Kenya known as “a vampire,” has escaped from custody along with 12 other detainees. The escape took place at Nairobi’s Gigiri police station, where Khalusha and other suspects, including individuals from Eritrea, were being held.

It is alleged that the escape was facilitated by eight police officers, including station commanders, who reportedly allowed the inmates to cut through a wire mesh in their cells and scale the perimeter wall. Authorities only discovered the breakout when officers arrived to serve breakfast to the detainees.

Mohamed Amin, the head of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that Khalusha was considered a high-value suspect due to the severity of the charges against him.

Khalusha, 33, has been described by the police as a “psychopath” and a “vampire” for his alleged involvement in the murder of 42 women. The escape has prompted an investigation, with officials vowing to take appropriate action against those involved.

Khalusha was being held for further investigation into the 42 homicides linked to him, after his arrest in July. Authorities became aware of his crimes following the discovery of 10 mutilated bodies in a quarry in Nairobi’s Kware neighborhood.

Khalusha allegedly confessed to the murders, claiming responsibility for the deaths of 10 women found in the quarry and 32 others over a two-year period, including his missing wife, who was reportedly his first victim. His confession has fueled concerns about the extent of his crimes.

Despite the serious allegations, Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, maintains his client’s innocence, asserting that Khalusha’s confession was obtained through police torture.

Ndegwa expressed shock and confusion over the escape, noting that he last spoke to Khalusha on Friday when the court ordered his detention to be extended by another week. The unexpected prison break has left the lawyer and others perplexed, as Khalusha was expected to remain under tight security.

The eight police officers accused of aiding the escape are now facing disciplinary measures. Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli has confirmed that the officers involved will be held accountable as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident has raised serious questions about the security and integrity of the police force, particularly regarding how such a high-profile suspect was able to escape custody with apparent inside help.
